  • What will my dog learn on walks?
We will discuss what elements of your dog's training that you would like to improve in our initial meeting. Usually, we will work on solidifying our recalls initially and then work on more complex behaviours such as loose lead walking and distance control. Occasionally, we also learn some tricks and other behaviours. The training is designed to fit in to the walk and enhance their general overall obedience.
  • What happens when I book my dog in to be walked?
Initially, I will come to your house to meet you and your dog, as well as fill out relevant paperwork and take a key if you are not going to be home. The paperwork includes our terms and conditions, a behaviour evaluation form and some personal details including details of your vet, emergency contacts and insurance company. This is important so that in the unlikely event of a medical emergency, I can ensure that your dog receives the best care available. Once this has all been completed, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. We will arrange what days and times your dog will be walked and get you booked in.
  • Will you let me know how the walk went?
You will receive a text after the walk informing you of what we did and how it went. Pictures and/or videos will then be uploaded to our facebook page in the evening so you can see what they have been up to. If you are concerned of would like a more detailed update, then you are welcome to get in touch at any time.
  • How do I make payment and when is it due?
You can make payment via cash, bank transfer or card payment. Please indicate which you would prefer when we meet. Payment is due by the end of the working week within which the walks took place. In the event that payment is not made, services may be suspended and further actions may be taken.
  • Are you insured? What qualifications do you hold?
I have extensive insurance with Petplan Sanctuary which includes keyholder's insurance and personal liability. A copy of my policy schedule is available to view at request. I have a BSc in Animal Behaviour as well as several years experience working at dog training schools around the country. I attend regular CPD and I am both human and canine first aid certified.
  • What happens if my dog gets injured on a walk?
In the event of an unfortunate accident, our main priority will be to get your dog the most appropriate medical attention as soon as possible. If the injury is minor and first aid is viable then I will always be carrying a first aid kit with me and I am trained in Canine First Aid. If the injury is more serious and veterinary treatment is required then every attempt will be made to get in touch with you or your emergency contacts. If this is not possible, then we will attend your preferred veterinary practice to seek medical treatment. If the injury is deemed too severe to handle the drive then treatment will be sought from the nearest available veterinary clinic. Please be aware that you will be liable for any veterinary fees incurred and these will need to be paid at the earliest opportunity or when requested by the veterinary practice. Your dog's health and wellbeing is always my ultimate priority and I will always do everything I can to protect them from any injury or illness. Unfortunately, freak accidents do happen and I have ensured that protocols are in place for worst case scenarios. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss this further, please get in touch.
  • Do I need to drop them off or will you pick them up?
We will always do our best to work around your schedule. Pick up/drop off is included in the price for dogs that live within 2 miles of my home. There is an additional charge of £5 for dogs within 2-5 miles of my home. This is to cover my time and fuel costs as this could take up to an hour depending on traffic (there and back twice). Outisde of this, we do not offer a collection service but you are more than welcome to drop them off to us.
  • Will you feed my dog?
We can feed your dog for you whilst they are here but please be aware that we may need to alter their feeding times to reduce the risk of bloat. The current advice from vets is to feed 30 minutes after exercise or two hours before. This is not always practical, but we will always do our best, particularly with dogs who are at high risk (deep chested dogs e.g. boxers, german shepherds, retrievers, etc.). As all dogs are fed treats whilst out with us, please don't worry that your dog is going hungry!
  • Can I see where you will be keeping my dog? Is it safe?
Absolutely! You are more than welcome to arrange a meet and greet at my home so that you can check for yourself that everything is above board, and the home is safe and secure. Our garden is completely enclosed with 6 foot brick walls/fences. We also have a cupboard full of treats, poo bags and enrichment toys, plus if they are nice to Molly then she might even share her toybox with them! All of our downstairs is hard floors to make it easy to clean, and we have all the safety measures in place such as a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and evacuation prodecures. These are available to view on request. We are fully licensed by the council and they conduct an inspection of the property once a year to ensure we are adhering to guidelines. We have an extensive insurance policy for dog walking, daycare, dog boarding and dog training/behaviour work. You are welcome to a copy of our licence and insurance.
  • What happens with my dog whilst they are with you?
All dogs are treated as if they are our own whilst with us. This means lots of treats, kisses and cuddles! They will be walked, have a good play with their friends, receive some obedience training if appropriate and we will play with them. When they are not out on walks, they will be with me in my home. They are never left unsupervised unless previously agreed with you, and they will always be treated like royalty.
  • Isn’t giving my dog treats considered bribing? Will I have to rely on treats forever?!
Positive training relies on reinforcing your dog when they do something that you want them to do. If there’s nothing in it for them, then there’s no motivation for them to do it! We wouldn’t go to work if we weren’t getting paid, so it’s important that we remember to pay our dogs for a job well done. The more we pay them for good behaviour, the more they will want to do it. As they get better at it, we can reduce how often we reward them, this is called a “variable reinforcement strategy”. It’s also important to remember that, whilst food is very effective in most dogs, there are plenty of other ways we can pay them for good behaviour too, such as with play, praise or touch. So in short, yes, you should be paying your dogs throughout their life if you want them to keep doing what you like, but that doesn’t mean you have to load them up on hundreds of treats either.
  • What treats will I need and how many?
Please bear in mind that while their dinner may work well at home, often dogs will not find that exciting enough in a room full of other people and dogs. The best options in my opinion are cooked chicken, cheese, ham or cocktail sausage. If you are feeling more adventurous then cooked liver, sprats, heart and lung are especially tasty treats. You will be surprised how many treats you will go through in a session so make sure you bring much more than you think you need. Quantity is much more important to dogs than quality so you can cut the treats up into very small pieces and your dog will be quite happy without overeating. It is also advised that you reduce their dinner portion when training to keep them a healthy weight.
  • Can I bring children to class?
Yes, absolutely! It is really important that everyone in the home is on the same page when it comes to training so as not to confuse your dog. Bringing the family along is the best way to get everyone on board with the training plan so please bring anyone who would like to come. We only ask that children are supervised at all times to ensure their safety.
  • How long will it take to fix my dog’s behaviour?
Dog training is not an exact science and relies on a variety of different things to be successful, including largely your own commitment to the training. I cannot offer any guarantee on when and how well the problem will be fixed as it often depends on what is going on when I’m not there. I am, however, committed to improving the lives of dog owners so I will make every attempt at helping you along the way and I always offer email and phone support with all of my packages. This means that if you are struggling with any part of the training plan, I will be there to support you as much as I can.
  • Where are the classes held?
One to one training sessions are held at your home. I prefer to work in the same scenario that the problem is happening in for example, if your dog pulls excessively on the lead then I may suggest that we go for a walk together, or if your dog barks a lot at new visitors then we may work in the home. I find this method is much more effective and practical. If you would prefer to meet elsewhere, please contact me and we can discuss suitable options. Group classes are held at: Graig Community Hall Cowshed Lane Bassaleg NP10 8HZ The car park is just opposite the Ruperra arms and there is a park next door where you can take your dog to toilet. There are toilets for humans on site and I always carry poo bags and materials to clean up any accidents, please just ask.
  • What if I can't make a class or session?
All refunds are given at the discretion of Original Pet Dog Co. As per the cancellation policy, classes will only be refunded if cancelled by Original Pet Dog Co. due to inclement weather, hall closures, or other reasons outside of our control. If you fail to attend a class, or are not present at the time of a one to one session, then fees are still due. Cancellations can be made 48 hours prior to the first session. Once the first session or class has been completed then no refunds will be given. One to one sessions can be rearranged with 24 hours notice.
  • What will happen at my one to one sessions?
I start any session by greeting your dog(s) and making sure they know that I am not a threat (usually with a helping of cheese). Once they are happy for me to be in the home, we can sit down and discuss the problems you are experiencing. I will ask you some lifestyle questions so I can get an idea of what their daily routine is like and what may be causing the problem. I will then run through ways that we can resolve the problem. This may consist of a variety of things, such as changing routines, moving things around the house, advising on management solutions or practical training. Please be aware that not all problems are fixed by obedience training and therefore, don’t be surprised if we don’t do any physical training!
